Seen, Heard & Belonging Book Bundle
Children in Care & Care-Experienced Children’s Books | KS1–KS3
Perfect for Virtual School Heads, Designated Teachers, school leaders, social workers, foster carers, fostering services, librarians, inclusion leads and educators looking to create reading spaces where care-experienced children can see their experiences, identities and possibilities reflected.
Curated With Care
Every child deserves to find themselves in a book but not every book about care experience is right for every child.
That's why we take an attachment-aware and trauma-aware approach to curation, considering not only what a story is about, but how the experience is presented.
We look for stories where children have voice, agency and identity beyond their circumstances. The character owns their story. Difficult experiences can be acknowledged without making trauma the defining feature of the child's identity.
Our aim is to create collections that offer recognition without reduction, representation without labelling, and stories that can open conversations without requiring a child to disclose their own experience.
This approach supports thoughtful reading provision but does not replace individual professional judgement, therapeutic intervention or safeguarding practice.
For children in care and those with care experience, books can provide something particularly powerful: language for experiences that may be difficult to explain.
Foster care. Kinship care. Adoption. Separation. New families. New homes. Loss. Change. Belonging.
Yet many book collections have limited representation of these experiences.
That matters because a child a story that helps them and their lived experience feel valid and understood.
The Seen, Heard & Belonging Book Bundle has been created to help schools and the adults/professionals around the child build more representative collections that acknowledge the varied experiences of children in care and care-experienced children.
This is not simply a collection about being in care.
It is a collection about identity, belonging, relationships, resilience, family, change, hope and possibility.

Why Your School Needs This Collection
For a care-experienced child, representation can be more than a diversity statement.
It can be recognition. It can say: "Your story belongs here."
But representation needs to be handled with care. Children should not have to repeatedly encounter stories in which care experience, separation or trauma is the entirety of a character's identity.
Our approach is therefore centred on representation with agency.
We seek stories where children can see aspects of their own experiences reflected while also seeing characters who have friendships, personalities, dreams, humour, choices, strengths and futures beyond their circumstances.
For classmates, these books create opportunities to build empathy and understanding without requiring a care-experienced child to become the classroom's representative for care experience.
For schools and corporate parents, they provide a practical way to strengthen:
- Belonging and inclusion
- Reading for pleasure
- Emotional literacy
- Relationships and social understanding
- PSHE and pastoral provision
- Care-experienced pupil support

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How are the books in the Seen, Heard & Belonging collection selected?
This is not simply a collection of books containing the words foster care, adoption or children in care. The Happier Every Chapter team curates titles with care experience, attachment and trauma awareness in mind, considering the emotional themes, narrative perspective, language, representation and overall suitability of each book.
We look for stories that offer children recognition, agency, hope and belonging, while avoiding collections dominated by deficit-based or distress-focused narratives.
2. Are the books curated with attachment and trauma awareness?
Yes. Attachment-aware and trauma-aware considerations inform the curation of this collection.
We consider how themes such as separation, loss, family change, rejection, relationships and belonging are presented, and whether a book provides an age-appropriate and emotionally constructive reading experience.
The collection is designed to support reading and conversation, not to replace therapeutic or specialist support.
3. How do you reduce the risk of books triggering or retraumatising a care-experienced child?
We deliberately look for stories where the character owns their story, rather than being defined solely by what has happened to them.
Where appropriate, we favour narratives that give characters voice, agency, identity, relationships, choices and hope, rather than positioning the child only as a victim of difficult circumstances.
This does not mean difficult experiences are excluded. Instead, they are considered carefully within the context of the whole story and its emotional resolution.
4. What does it mean that “the character owns it”?
It means we look for stories in which the child or young person is more than their care experience.
They have a personality, friendships, interests, hopes, humour, strengths and a sense of agency.
Their experience may be part of their story, but it does not have to be the entirety of their identity.
This can create opportunities for children to recognise aspects of their own experience without feeling that they are being defined by it.
5. Will every book be explicitly about being in care?
No, and intentionally so.
The collection may include books about foster care, adoption and kinship care, but also broader stories about belonging, family, friendship, trusted adults, identity, change, resilience, home and new beginnings.
This gives children opportunities to see themselves reflected without requiring them to repeatedly engage with books that explicitly identify them as being in care.
6. Can the collection be used with children who have experienced trauma or disrupted attachment?
The collection can support trauma-aware and attachment-aware reading environments, particularly when books are selected and introduced thoughtfully by adults who know the child.
However, books are not a substitute for therapeutic, clinical or specialist support.
Where a child has specific needs or known sensitivities, we recommend that the responsible professional uses their knowledge of the child when deciding which titles are most appropriate.
7. Can I request books for a particular care experience or age group?
Yes. Collections can be curated according to the age, setting and intended purpose.
Themes may include:
- Foster care
- Kinship care
- Adoption
- Residential care
- Family separation
- New families
- Belonging and identity
- Loss and change
- Friendship and trusted adults
- Emotional wellbeing
- New beginnings
Collections can be created from KS1 through KS3.
